New film project for Sir Ranulph Fiennes

Named the “World’s Greatest Living Explorer” by the Guinness Book of Records, Sir Ranulph Fiennes has an exciting new film out on 14th July. The documentary, simply named The Explorer, is aimed at telling his story, and revealing the man behind the adventurer.

The newly-released trailer here features exclusive footage from Ranulph Fiennes’ own film archive.  This footage has been preserved by the BFI National Archive.  The team also had access to the man himself, leading to the creation of a very personal project.

Adventures include

Sir Ranulph Fiennes is the first person to reach both North and South Poles by foot. He also made it into the record books by completing seven marathons on seven continents (including Antarctica) in seven days – soon after receiving emergency heart surgery. It was then he took up climbing, starting with the North Face of the Eiger.  Ran went on to become the first British OAP at the age of 65 on his third attempt to conquer Everest. Ran holds the current world record as being the only person ever to have climbed Mount Everest and crossed both Antarctica and the Arctic Ocean via the Poles.

He has also completed the Marathon des Sables – the equivalent 6 marathons in 6 days across the Sahara Desert (renowned as the toughest race in the world) as a major fund-raising challenge for Marie Curie.

His latest national tour this year is, Sir Ranulph Fiennes: Living Dangerously.

Ran has also filmed a three part TV series with his cousin, the actor Joseph Fiennes, covering their travels in Egypt marking the 50th anniversary of his expedition for National Geographic, Return to the Nile.

Motivational Speaker

He inspires and entertains conference and after dinner audiences throughout the world. Presentations draw a connection between nature’s most dangerous and difficult challenges, and the day-to-day hurdles we all face. Teamwork, determination, patience, discipline and creative thinking are all critical in expeditions.  He says we may not risk our own lives in the same way, but the parallels are clear even in less hazardous occupations. Ranulph explains the challenge of raising £40 million in sponsorship, finding the right volunteers. This is plus planning complex journeys beset by political, personal, geographical, financial and physical obstacles. To him, building a team with the right balance of character and attitude is paramount. Therefore, persistence, tolerance, fitness, agility and the ability to perform under extreme pressure are all key factors in his remarkable endeavours. There is another dimension to the expeditions. A huge amount of scientific research has been carried out by Ranulph Fiennes’ teams, and charities such as Marie Curie and the Multiple Sclerosis Society have benefitted to the tune of many millions. The Daily Telegraph listed Ranulph Fiennes as ‘one of the world’s top ten speakers.’

Books

He has also written numerous books including the UK bestseller (Times and Telegraph) in 1991 The Feather Men, and in 2003 the top selling biography (Times) of Captain Scott. My Heroes was published in 2011, the same year The Feather Men was released as a major motion picture Killer Elite.  In 2013 he published, Cold: Extreme Adventures at the Lowest Temperatures on Earth.
