Motivational speaker Justin Hughes is a former Red Arrows pilot & leader.  He is MD of Mission Excellence, a consultancy which partners with clients to accelerate organisational effectiveness. Clients range from global corporations (e.g. 3M, Microsoft) to public sector (e.g. Bank of England, NATO) and world championship-winning sports franchises (e.g. Mercedes F1).

Background

Prior to Mission Excellence, Justin was a RAF fighter pilot. He graduated as top cadet of his officer training entry. Justin went on to fly the Tornado F3, an air defence fighter aircraft. He has taken part in both training and operational deployments globally. Justin was qualified to lead any scale of mission in any theatre. Subsequently he was selected for the Red Arrows, where he served for 3 years on the team.  His team performed in over 250 displays worldwide including 3 international tours. He was Executive Officer. Therefore, responsible for operational day-to-day management of the team.  Justin oversaw a hand-picked group of 9 elite pilots and 90 support personnel.

Justin has an MBA with Distinction from LBS plus a BSc (Hons) in physics from the University of Bristol.  In 2020 Justin joined The Board of Advisors for Digital Wellbore and became a Board Trustee & Member of the Resources Committee for Coastal learning Partnership – Multi Academy Trust.

Justin has presented at hundreds of management meetings, conferences, academic forums and dinners worldwide on performance, leadership, decision-making, risk and safety.  His ‘signature’ presentation, ‘The Business of Excellence’, based on his book of the same name, explores the drivers of high performance in teams and organisations.  It draws on examples from business, sport, the military, and his own personal experience as a fighter pilot and member of the Red Arrows.
